Description | Tom Osborne said Tuesday he's seriously considering a bid for the governorship in 2006 as the final stop in his public career.
"I think I probably have about one more shot to do something," the 66-year-old 3rd District congressman said in Lincoln.
"I'm thinking seriously about running for governor. There are some issues I'd like to take a shot at."
He's grateful for the chance to work for his rural district's economic interests and help shape legislation as a Republican member of the House of Representatives for three years, he said.
But the former University of Nebraska football coach would like to be in a decision-making role.
"For a long time, I ran something instead of being one of 435," he said.
"I was more in a position of making decisions instead of reacting to other's decisions."
Osborne was head coach for 25 years, leading the Huskers to three national championships and emerging as the best-known and arguably most popular figure in Nebraska.
In 2000, three years after retiring as football coach, he surprised the state by venturing into a new political career.
