Description | PHOENIX -- The Republican gubernatorial field shrank again Friday as Jan Smith Florez pulled out of the race.
The former Santa Cruz County attorney and judge on the state Court of Appeals said there is no way a relatively political unknown can gather the more than 4,000 $5 donations to qualify for public funding. Florez said candidates need a political organization or some sort of organization of backers.
She said that is why GOP contender Len Munsil was able to qualify already, what with the contacts he made during his decade as president of the Center for Arizona Policy. Munsil, however, said he has not used CAP resources or mailing lists in his bid.
Her decision leaves three others in the race aside from Munsil who hope to challenge incumbent Democrat Janet Napolitano: Don Goldwater, Mike Harris and Gary Tupper. Goldwater continues his effort to get the necessary $5 donations; Harris and Tupper are running with private cash. |
