DescriptionNEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Cory Booker, a 37-year-old former Rhodes scholar, Tuesday became Newark's first new mayor in two decades, ushering in a new era for New Jersey's largest city.

With 89 percent of precincts reporting, Booker had 28,671 votes — or 72 percent of the total — versus 9,457, or 24 percent, for his nearest challenger, state Sen. Ronald L. Rice.
