Description | Poll says it's 57-14 in Newark race

With Mayor Sharpe James out of the picture, former Newark councilman Cory Booker now has a monstrous lead over his closest competitor in the mayoral race, according to a new Star-Ledger poll.
Booker, the 36-year-old contender who lost to James in 2002, has a 43-point advantage -- 57 percent to 14 percent -- over state Sen. Ronald Rice, a veteran Newark politician and a state senator, the poll says. Even in the city's West Ward, Rice's home turf, Booker holds a 39-27 lead.
The poll Tuesday and Wednesday of registered voters also suggests a Booker-James race could have been tight had the five-term mayor not dropped out of the race Monday. More than half of registered voters said they approved of his job as mayor, including 81 percent of those who voted for him last time.
Mickey Blum, whose firm, Blum & Weprin Associates, conducted the telephone survey, acknowledged James's high approval ratings could reflect an afterglow of sympathy from his sudden announcement. But the numbers still indicate James would be doing a lot better than Rice. |
