| Description | Madison - Ending the political career of a rising Republican Party star, a Dane County jury Saturday convicted former Assembly Speaker Scott R. Jensen of three felonies and one misdemeanor for directing legislative staffers to campaign on state time.
The felony convictions mean the Town of Brookfield Republican will have to give up his Assembly seat and ruins hopes that he had to run for governor some day.
Jensen, 45, will be removed from office when he is sentenced, which Dane County Circuit Judge Steven Ebert said will occur in early May.
A May sentencing would allow Jensen to participate in April votes in the Legislature, but it means he would not be able to stand for re-election this fall. Jensen faces a maximum penalty of 16 years' imprisonment and a $35,000 fine. He also could be ordered to pay restitution to the state for misusing taxpayers' resources.
If he is sentenced before May 9, a special election would be held to fill the vacancy.
Jensen would be the fourth lawmaker in the state's 158-year history to be forced out of office by a criminal conviction.
After the jury returned its verdicts shortly before noon, a visibly shaken Jensen stood outside of the courtroom and thanked his family, friends and Waukesha County constituents for "the incredible support they have given me." |
