Description | Conservative advocate Len Munsil has leap-frogged to front-runner status in the Republican primary for governor.
Munsil -- the former head of the Center for Arizona Policy advocacy group -- is increasingly viewed by business lobbyists, GOP party leaders and the party's conservative base as the likely Republican opponent to Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano.
West Valley Congressman Trent Franks has officially endorsed Munsil's candidacy. Some top state and national Republicans are also privately supportive of Munsil's run, hoping he can energize the GOP base and offer stark differences to Napolitano on issues such as immigration and tax cuts, and social issues such as abortion and gay marriage.
"I think he's going to win the primary," said Gretchen Jacobs, a lobbyist for the Greenberg Traurig law firm.
Jacobs and others point to Munsil's base of grass roots and conservative support stemming from his leadership with the Scottsdale-based CAP group, which promoted a socially conservative agenda. The group is a top backer of a proposed state ban on same-sex marriages and has pushed for tougher controls on pornography and gaming. |
