| Description | The crowd of Republicans seeking to challenge Democrat Melissa Bean in the northwest suburban 8th Congressional District shrank Tuesday when Mundelein businesswoman Teresa Bartels withdrew.
Bartels, perceived as one of the top candidates in the seven-person field, notified state election officials of her intention to withdraw from the March 21 primary after telling supporters at her campaign headquarters.
A first-time candidate, Bartels cited an unwillingness to compete financially against a field that includes two millionaires--investment banker David McSweeney of Barrington and lawyer Kathy Salvi of Mundelein--who already have invested heavily in the race.
Bartels put about $80,000 of her money into her campaign, along with nearly $400,000 in donations from supporters. She said she did not want to invest more of her personal wealth.
McSweeney, who has lent his campaign nearly $1 million, raised more than $98,000 during the fourth quarter of 2005, spent about $491,000 and had nearly $514,000 on hand. Salvi raised $58,000, spent almost $162,000 and had about $284,000 in the bank. She has invested $285,000 of her own money. |
