Description | Longtime Republican activist Mike Hellon will seek the seat of U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., in what is shaping up to be political free-for-all with national implications.
Republicans hold a slight registration edge in Arizona's 8th Congressional District. Democrats and independents account for nearly 60 percent of the vote.
Hellon, 63, took a while to talk himself into tackling what he called the difficult task of running and, if successful, serving as congressman.
"I have no illusions that this is a glamorous activity," Hellon said. "It's going to be a lot of hard work."
He has yet to file for the race but said he can draw on enough support to mount a successful campaign.
He served as Arizona GOP chairman from 1997 to 1999 and was state committeeman to the national party from 1992 to 2004.
He casts himself as a moderate alternative to Republican Randy Graf, a former state legislator who favors building more fences to keep illegal immigrants out of the country. |
