DescriptionPortland Press Herald article.

An excerpt...
"Republican lawmakers, pouncing on a string of Democratic defections, are demanding a bigger say at the State House, putting politics at center stage as the 2006 legislative session starts today.

The outcome of the fight may help decide whether the major parties work together or remain at odds in the months ahead.

With another Democratic representative deciding to become an independent, the party has lost its one-vote majority in the 151-member House of Representatives, leaving the two major parties tied with 73 seats each. Four independents and one Green Independent hold the rest of the seats.

The Democrats held a three-seat margin in the House after the last election in 2004, but two Democratic representatives became independents last year and a third - Barbara Merrill of Appleton - did so Monday."
