Art's Barber Shop in downtown Safford is the quintessential gathering spot in rural Arizona, cramped quarters where folks go for a trim, a bit of chitchat and a helping of political soup in this Republican town.
Van Talley fits the profile of the clientele: a proud rural Arizonan who is a small-business owner and a fan of limited government. The lifelong Republican doesn't fit the typical fan club of Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, but he likes the job she has been doing since taking over the state in 2003.
"She's smart. I think she's done a very good job," said Talley, former mayor of Safford. "She is consistent and straightforward, which are good attributes for a politician to have."
On the eve of the 2006 election year, Arizona Republic reporters fanned out across the state to get a pulse of Arizonans and their views on subjects ranging from the governor to immigration, taxes, health care and education. Like Talley, many said they like Napolitano's mainstream agenda and determination.

In mid-December, 83 percent of the 602 registered voters surveyed expressed confidence in Napolitano's ability to govern effectively, including 39 percent who said they were very confident. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. |
