Description | A Democrat's decision to leave the party balances the partisan breakdown in the state House of Representatives a day before lawmakers convene Wednesday for their 2006 session.
Rep. Barbara Merrill's defection leaves Democrats and Republicans each with 73 seats. Merrill, of Appleton, becomes one of four unenrolled or independent members in the House, which has long been controlled by Democrats. One Green party member also serves in the 151-seat chamber.
Democrats maintain control in the state Senate, where they have 19 of 35 seats. |
