DuPage County state Sen. Carole Pankau will decide within days whether to make a statewide run for comptroller.
Republican leaders have been lobbying the Itasca lawmaker to run for the job, which entails being the official custodian of the state’s checkbook.
“I think it’d be great. I know she has serious interest in it,” said Andy McKenna Jr., chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, on Friday afternoon.
McKenna said he’s talked to three or four others about the office, including one businessperson and some elected officials. Pankau, however, appears to be the first choice.
“I think this (Pankau) is the most active conversation right now,” McKenna said.
Pankau would help bring gender and geographic balance to the GOP statewide ticket. “Suburban voters are important to us. We’re trying to have a ticket that appeals to them,” McKenna said.
If she runs, Pankau would be taking on Comptroller Dan Hynes of Chicago. The two-term incumbent plans an official kickoff next month. “While she (Pankau) would be a formidable opponent, we feel his record would speak for itself and we look forward to explaining Dan’s record to the voters,” campaign spokesman Matt Hynes said. |
