Description | The Republican Party's quest for a top-tier candidate in the 2006 governor's race took another ominous turn Thursday when its latest "best hope" bowed out, leaving party leaders wondering why they can't find a viable candidate to run against Gov. Janet Napolitano.
Mary Peters' surprise exodus leaves the GOP without any established names to challenge Napolitano as 2006 draws near.
The exit of Peters, a former head of the state Department of Transportation, is the latest in a long line of departures for the Republicans, who dominate the state Legislature, own a 150,000-voter registration edge and traditionally have fielded highly competitive candidates for governor. |
