PHOENIX -- An increasing number of Arizonans believe border and immigration are the top issues facing the state.
But a new survey shows that hasn't hampered the popularity of Gov. Janet Napolitano despite claims by Republicans that she has been doing little to deal with the problem.
The poll of 406 adults conducted within the last week finds that 70 percent of those asked believe the governor is doing a good job. That is the same as when the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University asked the same question this spring -- and 10 points higher than spring of 2004.
Pollster Fred Solop also found that 34 percent of those questioned singled out border and immigration issues as the top concern for the state today. By contrast, that was the response of only 27 percent in the spring and 16 percent a year before that.
Solop noted there has been increasing publicity about the problems of illegal border crossing. At the same time, Republican legislators have been hammering Napolitano, saying she has ignored the problem.
They point out, for example, that she opposed Proposition 200, approved by voters last year, to deny certain benefits to illegal entrants and require identification to register and vote. And Napolitano also vetoed legislation that would permit -- and not even require -- local police to enforce federal immigration laws.
But Solop said that voters apparently don't believe the governor is ignoring the issue -- at least not now. |
