Description | NEWARK, N.J. -- Donald K. Tucker, a civil rights activist and the longest-serving councilman in the state's largest city, has died. He was 67.
Tucker, a high school dropout who also was a member of the state Assembly when he died Monday night, had insisted on working even as his health failed.
He had diabetes, survived a stroke and used a pacemaker, but resisted suggestions that he retire as his health problems worsened, saying he would die in office. Tucker attended City Council meetings until several weeks ago, sometimes using a wheelchair or cane.
"My job is not a job," he said in a 2004 interview with The Star-Ledger of Newark. "My job is my life." |
