DescriptionPolk County Auditor Michael Mauro on Thursday officially announced his bid for secretary of state.

Mauro is the second person and the only Democrat to declare his candidacy for the post. The election is in November 2006.

Republican Chuck Allison, a Des Moines podiatrist, is also running. Current Secretary of State Chet Culver is running for governor.

Mauro, 57, has administered elections in Iowa's largest county the past two decades. He has been in the midst of controversial elections and election changes statewide and in Des Moines.
