Description | Gilbert businessman Dave Thompson dipped his toes in the political waters over the past month and pondered a run for governor.
On Monday, the Republican decided to stay in the private sector and not spend millions to challenge Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano in 2006.
In an e-mail explaining his decision, Thompson thanked family and friends for their support. But the 49-year-old entrepreneur also said the governor's annual salary of $95,000 and Arizona's publicly funded elections are "discouraging other well-qualified candidates for governor."
He said he opposes Arizona's Clean Elections law because the spending limits heavily favor incumbents.
"Arizonans should immediately repeal the so-called Clean Elections law, which is bad policy and which entrenches a sitting governor," Thompson wrote. |
