Description | In their quest to unseat Gov. Janet Napolitano next year, Republicans are turning to three talented but untested leaders who are anything but household names in Arizona.
One is a high school dropout who joined the Army, went back to school and eventually became U.S. surgeon general. Another is a former secretary who became the nation's top highway administrator. The third is a state senator from Prescott who has become one of Napolitano's most outspoken opponents.
Surgeon General Richard Carmona, former Highway Administrator Mary Peters and Senate President Ken Bennett are the three leaders with the best chance of winning the Republican nomination for governor next year, according to more than two dozen veteran political strategists, pollsters and consultants interviewed by The Arizona Republic.
So far, none has committed to run against Napolitano. The three hopefuls have the potential to defeat her, many of the experts said. But they say Napolitano is still the odds-on favorite no matter who gets the Republican nomination. |
