Description | Richard Tarrant, the South Burlington businessman who is considering running for the U.S. Senate as a Republican, expects to spend $500,000 of his own money on the campaign.
In a letter to the secretary of the U.S. Senate, Tarrant said he has "not made a final decision on whether to be a candidate" but he is forming an exploratory committee.
"I intend to spend personal funds exceeding the threshold amounts … by $500,000 in both the primary and general election," according to the letter.
Tarrant may ultimately spend more or less than that.
Under the so-called "millionaire's amendment" in federal campaign finance law, the opponents of a self-financed candidate are allowed to accept larger donations from individuals and political parties than under ordinary circumstances.
"You have to inform them that you are potentially going to use your own money," said Tarrant spokesman Tim Lennon.
"In the early stages of the campaign, it is important to get one's message out."
Tarrant has also hired Republican political strategist Dave Carney to work on the campaign as well. The Web site domain www.tarrant06.com is registered by Norway Hill Associates of Hancock, N.H., a firm owned by Carney, a one-time top political aide to former President George H.W. Bush. |
