Description | Supporters hoping for Paul Vallas' return to Illinois as a Democratic candidate for governor said Wednesday they will file papers with the Cook County Circuit Court seeking a judgment on whether Vallas meets residency requirements established in the state constitution.
Election attorneys Burt Odelson, James Nally and Michael Lavelle are seeking the court order on behalf of a group of Vallas supporters, led by his brother, in an attempt to clarify his residency status. Under the constitution, a candidate for governor must be a resident of Illinois for three years preceding the election.
Vallas, who finished second in the 2002 Democratic primary, became the head of the Philadelphia public school system shortly after he lost his bid for the nomination to Rod Blagojevich by about 25,000 votes. Blagojevich went on to win the election.
Vallas, the former chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools, has said in the past that he has no plans to leave Philadelphia to seek a rematch against Blagojevich in the 2006 Democratic primary. |
