Description | BATON ROUGE, La. -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that she's giving up on her proposed cigarette tax hike. The measure has remained stalled on the House floor for more than a month as the governor fought against strong opposition trying to get the votes she needed to pass it.
Blanco said a bipartisan majority of lawmakers supported the tax, but not the two-thirds majority needed for passage.
Blanco told a Baton Rouge news conference that thousands of educators and parents across our state are bitterly disappointed that a willful, obstructionist group sided with cigarette vendors and against teachers and children.
