| Description | During his four years on the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education -- first as an appointee, then as an elected member -- Andrew Ginther said he has promoted strong community involvement while performing the standard board functions of reviewing programs and approving budgets.
Now he wants community discussion to focus on reducing the level of violence in the schools.
Ginther, one of seven candidates for school board on the May 3 primary ballot, advocates training for staff members and students that would teach them to deal with cultural differences and challenges, and setting standards so solutions can be measured for effectiveness. He pointed out that the district already uses a number of intervention programs, such as peer mediation, to address and prevent conflicts, but new tactics are called for.
"The city has changed in the last four or five years, and we as a board have to acknowledge that," he said. He said the recent economic downturn resulted in spikes of crime, including domestic violence, which tend to affect the way students behave.
"This is an issue of poverty ... not simply that there are the immigrant populations. It's more complex than that," he said.
