DescriptionLONDON, England (CNN) -- James Callaghan, a World War II veteran who rose through the ranks of the British government and became prime minister in the mid-1970s, died Saturday at age 92.

Callaghan, a former Labor Party leader, passed away at his home in East Sussex on the eve of his 93rd birthday, the U.K. Press Association reported.

Callaghan died 11 days after the death of Audrey, his wife of 67 years.
