Description | McKenna said he is asking for the resignation of the party's entire staff. They can reapply, but he will be looking for new blood, too -- perhaps people who worked on Bush's campaign in battleground states.
Usually, the head of a state party stays in the background, focusing on fund-raising and letting officeholders speak for the party. But high-level Republican officials are such an endangered species in Illinois that the party chairman has emerged as an important figure.
McKenna seems interested in reducing the chairman's profile.
He talked about being just one voice speaking for the party and stressed his role as a team-builder and fund-raiser. Asked about corruption within the administration of Democratic Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, McKenna offered only the mildest of criticism.
If Republicans hope to win more elections, they should talk about creating jobs, overhauling the way lawsuits are handled and cleaning up government, McKenna says. But he acknowledges it won't be easy to get everyone on the same page.
"We're a party with many different points of view and personalities, and it will take time to build the unity to be effective," McKenna said. "That won't happen overnight." |
