Description | Putting to rest any doubts about his political ambitions, Warrenton Mayor George Fitch on Tuesday will announce his plans to seek the Republican nomination for governor.
Mr. Fitch, 56, will make a statement at 10 a.m. at the John Barton Payne Community Hall on Courthouse Square in Warrenton.
His declaration comes as no surprise. In November, Mr. Fitch attended a fund-raiser at Napoleon's Restaurant during which he confirmed his intentions.
In the June GOP primary, he will face Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, a likely favorite among rank-and-file Republicans.
Mr. Kilgore plans to ignore Mr. Fitch, focusing his energy on Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine, the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee for the top job in the November 2005 general election.
Mr. Fitch hopes to turn his outsider status into an asset with voters weary of business-as-usual party politicians.
He plans to emphasize his support for cutting Warrenton's real estate tax rate. He believes the town did so without compromising the scope or quality of public services. |
