Description | When Sen. Saxby Chambliss takes the Agriculture Committee gavel today, he'll end a different sort of drought for Georgia.
Not since Democrat Sam Nunn led the Senate Armed Services panel has any Georgian served as a committee chairman. Chambliss, a Republican, is making the leap after just two years in the upper chamber.
"It means that No. 1, we will be in leadership meetings that we have not been in before," Chambliss said Wednesday, commenting publicly on his new job for the first time.
It's not that the state has had a total leadership void over the last decade. It has had Newt Gingrich as House speaker and Sen. Paul Coverdell as GOP conference secretary, but even those jobs don't have the single-issue influence that comes with leading a committee. |
