Peterson to become House Ag Committee ranking member

| Description | WASHINGTON -- Democrats chose Rep. Collin Peterson to become ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee on Wednesday, despite objections from some members that he hadn't been a loyal member of the caucus.
Peterson, a conservative Minnesota Democrat who has crossed party lines on some key votes, replaces former Texas Rep. Charlie Stenholm, who was defeated in the November elections.
Peterson was next in line in seniority for the spot, but the promotion was not automatic. He needed approval from the Democratic steering committee, which endorsed him for the spot Wednesday morning. A caucus vote followed to make it official.
But earlier in the week, some Democrats criticized Peterson in a closed-door meeting for his voting record and his lack of fund-raising for the party.
"Collin's been on the sidelines the past couple of years,'' said Rep. Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat who serves on the steering committee. "Collin made it clear his district would come first. But he will become much more involved as a team player.'' |
