Description | PHOENIX (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake goes into the Sept. 7 Republican primary with some distinct advantages over an opponent with an ambitious agenda.
Only about 30 percent of voters show up for primary elections, and those who do are generally older and more conservative -- factors that could hurt Flake's opponent, former state senator Stan Barnes, who is more moderate, said Bruce Merrill, an Arizona State University professor and pollster.
"The religious right and far right turns out overwhelmingly in these elections," Merrill said. "I see that helping Flake."
Also aiding Flake, the 6th Congressional District he is fighting to keep, which includes parts of Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Apache Junction and Queen Creek, is considered a conservative stronghold.
Flake has also raised more money -- $540,000 to $150,000 for Barnes.
These factors aren't enough to discourage Barnes. |
