Alvarez, Morales to battle in runoff

| Description | Sending out a clear anti-corruption message, voters picked former county police chief Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Jimmy Morales over six opponents to face each other in a runoff election for Miami-Dade mayor in November.
Alvarez rode his credibility as an honest cop to bolt past the pack for first place, and Morales banked on his image as an honest unifier to beat out former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferré, former Commissioner Miguel Diaz de la Portilla and businessman Jose Cancela in a tight race for second place.
''I have an army of people that believe in me,'' Alvarez said. ''We got the message out. We proved that money doesn't buy you a seat. People in Dade County want a change, that's what I offer.''
Alvarez said voters voiced a ''basic lack of trust in county government.''
Alvarez and Morales, who both put reform at the forefront of their campaigns, will have two months to campaign against each other before the general election on Nov. 2.
