Illinois panel keeps Nader off the ballot

| Description | The Illinois State Board of Elections Thursday unanimously found Ralph Nader's nominating petition invalid, preventing the independent presidential candidate from getting on the November ballot for now.
The board rejected Nader's petition because it fell short of the 25,000 signatures required. Although the Nader campaign filed 32,000 signatures by the deadline, thousands were deemed invalid, many because the addresses of signers on the petition did not match their addresses in voter-registration records.
But the decision on whether to place Nader on the ballot may not have much of an impact in a state where Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry is expected to win easily and President Bush is not expected to campaign vigorously.
Before the board made its decision, Nader was trying to force his way onto the ballot by filing a lawsuit in federal court, as his campaign is doing in other states.
