"On Saturday, horse racing fans across the country will turn their attention to the Breeders' Cup, a series of eight championship races considered the sport's biggest event of the year. But on the same day, fans of political horse races would be well-advised to focus their attention on Monmouth County.

That's where Republicans from the 11th District will meet at a special convention to select a replacement for Assemblyman Thomas S. Smith, who passed away at the age of 84 last month. State law provides that the convention take place in the 35 days after the vacancy occurs, and Saturday's winner will fill the remainder of Smith's turn.

The four contenders right now are Long Branch Councilman Anthony Giordano, Wall Township Republican Club President Sean Kean, Spring Lake Council President Walter Kimm, and former Asbury Park Mayor Carl Williams."
