Description | This largely rural riding encompasses the communities of Braeburn, Ibex Valley, Deep Creek, Takhini Hotsprings Road, Pilot Mountain, Hidden Valley, MacPherson and Forestview. It was created in 1992 when new boundaries were drawn. It underwent a few minor adjustments after the last boundary review in 2002, losing its voters in Crestview, Porter Creek and MacKenzie's RV Park.
It takes in the traditional territory of the Ta'an Kwach'an First Nation, which makes its home on the shores of Lake Laberge and the Yukon River. It includes the Takhini Hot Springs resort and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. The Yukon Party purchased the preserve from its private owner after coming to power.
The constituency also used to house the territory's only reindeer farm but the government slaughtered the herd in a controversial move in 2005. Land is always a big issue in this riding, which boasts a large number of farmers and country residential dwellers. |
