Description | Nottingham South was won by the Conservative Martin Brandon-Bravo in 1983 and 1987. But in 1992, his opponent, left-winger and now constant government critic, Alan Simpson, took the seat by just over 3,000 votes, which rose to just over 13,000 in 1997, and almost 10,000 in 2001. Unemployment in Nottingham South is almost double the national average but still lower than in the rest of the city. It also has the fourth highest proportion of students in the country - both Nottingham and Nottingham Trent universities fall within this seat. On Nottingham City Council the wards in this constituency are divided four ways between Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Independents.
