Description | This constituency comprises the whole of the old Stirling seat plus four wards from the old Ochil constituency. The constituency now covers the whole of the Stirling Council area. This new constituency is veritable Braveheart country. It takes in Stirling itself (the ancient Scottish capital) with its historic hilltop castle visible for miles across central Scotland. The town is close to the site of the battles of Bannockburn and Stirling Bridge, and has a close association with Braveheart himself, William Wallace. Indeed, the Wallace Monument dominates the town's skyline. The seat is relatively middle class. The new wards, however, include the eastern villages (Cowie, Plean and Fallin); former mining communities with a fairly high unemployment rate. There is a chipboard factory in Cowie which is the area's main employer. Bridge of Allan, home to the Stirling University campus, has also been added to this new constituency. Agriculture and tourism are among the main industries. There is, however a growing financial sector with the Prudential and the Bermuda Bank (IT section) having a substantial presence in or near the city.
