Description | This consists of the old Cumbernauld & Kilsyth constituency plus five wards from the old Strathkelvin & Bearsden constituency. The seat is located on the main road between Glasgow and Stirling and reaches into the Campsie Fells to the north and north west, long popular as a recreation and sight-seeing area for the population of Glasgow, which lies immediately to the south. Cumbernauld was granted new town status in 1956. The town centre won major architectural awards in the early 1960s and only now is undergoing a much needed face lift. It gained national recognition in the 1970s as the setting for the film Gregory's Girl. The population of the area is still growing and a new school was built two years ago, north of the A80, to accommodate the increase. Kilsyth is an older community with its industrial past steeped in mining. For the historians, Antonine's Wall, built during the time of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius, can be found on the outskirts of the town, and the Forth and Clyde Canal runs through the area.
