Description | The President of Fiji has largely been a ceremonial position since 2013. The president is elected by majority party vote by the Parliament of Fiji for a three-year term. He is figuratively the Commander of the Armed Forces.
Presidential duties were delineated under the terms of the 2013 Constitution of Fiji, written during the military regime of Commodore Frank Bainimarama. Bainimarama seized power beginning December 4, 2006 (called the "Fijian coup d'état of December 2006") and made himself Prime Minister on January 5, 2007. Bainimarama has held on to the position since. |
