Description | Formally known as "The Three Lower Counties on the Delaware River".
These three counties existed as a colony within the Pennsylvania Province. From 1682 to 1776 they shared the same governor. From 1682 to 1704, the three counties of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Chester and Bucks) and the three counties of Delaware (New Castle, Kent and Sussex) had equal representation in the Pennsylvania Assembly.
In 1701, after continued clashing between the two, William Penn agreed in having two separate assemblies. This officially started in October 1704. This arrangement of having a Governor for both colonies and two separate assemblies lasted until June 15, 1776 when the Delaware Assembly declared Independence from the United Kingdom and from Pennsylvania. June 15, 1776 is known as "Separation Day" in Delaware. |
