Description | The Territory of Colorado was organized by Congress on February 26, 1861 and signed by President James Buchanan on February 28, 1861. The territory embraced the identical area as the present state.
William Gilpin, the first territorial governor, arrived in Denver in May 1861. A census taken at this time showed a population of 25,329, of whom 4,484 were females. |
