From the late 1870s to the late 1930s, commissioned to Germany. During WWI, The U.S. severed diplomatic relations with Germany, Feb 3, 1917. An ambassador was commissioned in Dec. 1921, and ties we're reestablished.

During WWII, the last Ambassador to maintain diplomatic ties left his post in Nov. 1938. During the period 1938-1941, two individuals served in a lower office, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, until Germany declared war on the United Staes Dec 11, 1941.

The Embassy in Germany was reestablished in May, 1955 commissioned to the Federal Republic of Germany.
