Description | This constituency is made up of attractive countryside and well-off commuter villages, with a fifth of the workforce self-employed. Most other workers are in managerial or technical positions, and there is very little council housing. The seat's economy was traditionally based on agriculture, but it has now diversified, and the largest private sector employer is the aerospace contractor Cobham plc at Wimborne Minster. The area also benefits economically from the presence of Blandford army camp, which is the headquarters of the Royal Corps of Signals - the Army's computer department. The main towns of Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum are small, independent market towns - the latter was destroyed completely by fire in 1731. It was rebuilt in Georgian splendour, helped by a grant of £1,000 from George II, and attracts many tourists to the region. There are also numerous rural parishes - over 80 in all. The Dorset Downs and Cranbourne Chase, also found in this seat, are official "Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty", and Shaftesbury is of historic importance: it holds the remains of Edward the Martyr, murdered in 978. The Liberals won North Dorset in 1945 and held it for five years. However, they have failed to win it back and the seat's current incumbent is Tory Robert Walter. |
