Description | This constituency is made up of six electoral wards in the city of Bristol and three in neighbouring South Gloucestershire. It contains Avonmouth, Bristol's docks area, which has strong local trade union traditions (TGWU). It also has a direct link to the M5 nearby, where there are numerous associated trading estates. In contrast, Henbury and Horfield are more mixed - Horfield being home to large numbers of students from the University of the West of England. The constituency has its share of historic buildings such as Kings Weston house - and Blaise hamlet and Shirehampton were mentioned in the Domesday Book. Bristol North West has a highly skilled workforce, a tradition of technical development, and a variety of enterprises along Severnside which have contributed to its prosperity over the years. Rolls Royce's aero-engine factory is based at Filton and this area has a considerable working-class, if affluent, population. The Bristol Port Company has its headquarters here. Abbeywood, the government's defence procurement headquarters and probably the seat's largest employer, is also based in the constituency. Lots of new supermarkets, industrial estates, and offices are springing up in the gap between the City and the M4 and M5, having relocated from London. Their arrival contrasts with the poverty and crime in areas like Southmead, which includes peripheral run-down estates. |
