Description | This seat is the physically smaller of the two Norwich constituencies, and covers the city centre. Norwich was once the second city of England, and until the 17th Century was the leading manufacturing town, based on the wool industry. The historical trappings of past glories, and evidence of continued industrial development, are found almost exclusively in this division today from the beautiful city centre, two cathedrals and the university to the castle. Major employers in the constituency include the Colman's mustard factory, Norwich Union headquarters and the cattle market. The seat also includes the Carrow Road football stadium, home to recent Premiership re-entrants Norwich City FC (the Canaries), one of whose directors is Delia Smith. This is seen as Labour's safest seat in Norfolk by some way and, before 1997, was their only seat in Norfolk. Now it has a very high-profile MP - Home Secretary Charles Clarke.
