Description | This seat comprises all of the area covered by Maldon District Council, as well as a few wards of the local authority based around Chelmsford. It does not, however, take in any of Chelmsford town centre, all of which is in the Chelmsford West constituency. It is composed mainly of flat countryside and includes the rivers Blackwater and Crouch. The seat is bordered by a stretch of North Sea coastline to the east and includes only two towns of any size - Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch. There is a good deal of history here: in 991 there was a Battle of Maldon fought between the Danes and Saxons. Beeleigh Abbey was founded in 1180. All Saints Church has a monument celebrating Lawrence Washington, the great-great grandfather of George Washington, and much of the upper end of Maldon town reflects its medieval history. The port of Maldon is still trading today. The Old Thames Sailing Barges are still active on the river and can be seen at the Hythe Quay. One slightly unusual event, which takes place at New Year, is the annual Maldon Mud Race. It attracts many competitors and on-lookers from as far away as Japan. Burnham-on-Crouch is a quiet, unspoilt riverside town with a clock tower that has served as an ornate landmark since 1877. It is a fairly well known yachting centre, which has held a week long Regatta every August for over 100 years. It also holds a music and arts festival every June. Bradwell is in the constituency and is home to a nuclear power station, which was opened in 1962 on a disused airfield. It is also where St. Cedd, a celtic missionary, arrived in 653 when he came to bring Christianity to the people of Essex. St. Cedd's Chapel is there today. The more interesting businesses here include the Maldon Crystal Salt Company - the only UK based producer of sea salt - New Hall, which has the largest vineyard in East Anglia, and a number of companies that specialise in modern boat building. Also in the seat, on the southern edge of Chelmsford, are the suburban communities of Great Baddow and Galleywood. This seat has been solidly Conservative, churning out majorities just short of 20% even in the party's leanest years. |
