DescriptionA university town which is also home to a growing hi-tech industry, Cambridge lies in the middle of the fens. It is a shopping and administrative centre for the surrounding area. There are approximately 21,000 full time students in Cambridge - 16,500 at Cambridge University and 5,000 at Anglia Polytechnic University - of a total population of around 110,000 people. Cambridge also sees 16,000 foreign language students and more than three million tourists pass through every year. There has been a massive expansion in the number of hi-tech firms in Cambridge over the past 15 years. In addition to software, new sectors have grown - notably in biotechnology. Major pharmaceutical companies now have laboratories alongside university departments in Cambridge, and the human genome project in Hinxton, where the Sanger Centre is based, led an international consortium to complete the first draft of the human genome. This seat was held by the Tories until 1992 when it was secured by Labour's Anne Campbell. She was returned with a 20% majority at the last election.
