DescriptionLincoln, an ancient city with parts surviving from Roman times, is recognised by its magnificent cathedral, which dates back to 1070 and dominates the local landscape from its elevated position. The building has become a major tourist attraction - an important industry for a local economy once principally based on heavy industry. Such industry is now in marked decline. Lincoln has a notable electoral past. The seat remained loyal to Labour from 1945 to 1973, before the sitting MP, Dick Taverne, opposed to his party's drift to the left, resigned and fought a successful by-election as an Independent Democratic Labour candidate. However, Mr Taverne only held on to the seat until the October election of 1974 when he was beaten by Labour's Margaret Jackson - nowadays known as Margaret Beckett - who could also only hold Lincoln for a single term before ceding it to the Conservatives in 1979. Lincoln swung back to Labour in 1997, giving Gillian Merron a majority just short of 25%, and endorsed her again in 2001.
