Description | The boundary review of 1995, which blurred the boundaries of so many constituencies in Lincolnshire, saw the old seat of Grantham become Sleaford and North Hykeham. Meanwhile, the town and its 30,000 voters joined the Stamford element of what was previously the Stamford and Spalding seat. Despite Grantham being the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher, the town has previously tended to back Labour while much of the rest of this largely rural constituency is seen as Conservative. The other two large towns in the seat, Stamford and Bourne, have considerable historical associations. Many of their buildings are under conservation orders, with tourism playing an increasingly important role. There is a good deal of industry in the constituency - from the manufacture of specialist tractors to shoes. Both Labour and the Lib Dems have tried and failed to gain toe-holds in this rural and well-to-do constituency in the past. Labour came a close second to the incumbent Quentin Davies in 1997. However, the Lib Dems have also made some progress locally.
