| Description | Derbyshire South comprises a large area in the south of the city of Derby (about a quarter of the seat's electorate) and all the land south of the city itself. The largest town is the Labour stronghold of Swadlincote. The remainder of the constituency is made up of small towns and villages, the biggest of which is marginal Melbourne, the centre of a fertile market gardening area. The constituency is mainly agricultural with an industrial belt around Swadlincote which was historically based on coal and clay. In 1992 Toyota opened a car assembly plant at Burnaston: they have recently announced plans to invest a further £50m with the creation of 500 new jobs. It was created in 1983 mainly from the old Belper division which was represented from 1945 to 1970 by George Brown, Harold Wilson's Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and later Foreign Secretary. The present seat was first contested in 1983 and won by the flamboyant and outspoken Conservative Edwina Currie who went on to serve as a minister. Labour's Mark Todd, who defeated Ms Currie in 1997 by almost 14,000 votes, currently has a majority of nearly 8,000.
