| Description | This is territory containing southern districts of Middlesbrough and a mix of small towns, rural and coastal areas including the Cleveland hills, small towns such as Guisborough and seaside Saltburn. Its economy is correspondingly diverse with farming, fishing and ICI chemicals at Wilton all important. Formerly known as Langbaurgh, it was gained by Labour's Ashok Kumar in a 1991 by-election, only for him to lose it to his Conservative opponent, Michael Bates, at the 1992 General Election. Following the 1995 boundary changes in which 10,000 voters were transferred to next door Redcar, Dr Kumar regained the seat in 1997 by 10,000 votes. He held on in 2001 with only a few hundred fewer. There are at least four parts to this interesting seat. The small south east Teesside towns like Guisborough are marginal between Labour and the Tories. Saltburn was traditionally Conservative but has become marginal. Rural Hutton is Liberal Democrat and Labour polls very badly. Finally, the southern parts of Middlesbrough are divided between rock-solid Labour areas such as Easterside, and more affluent parts like Nunthorpe which tend towards the Tories in council polls.
