Description | Straddling the borough border of Gateshead and Sunderland, this seat covers the western half of Washington (a new town since 1964) but does not include the town centre, and the eastern part of the more inner city Gateshead. The new seat created in the 1995 boundary review made this into a far less "inner city" seat than its previous incarnation as Gateshead East. The decline of shipbuilding and coal mining has hit this seat hard, just like many of its neighbouring seats in the north east of England. The major sources of employment here are now in manufacturing and other light industries and are concentrated in the Crowther, Pattinson and Armstrong industrial estates. Joyce Quin has held this seat and its predecessor since 1987, and was the first woman Labour MP elected on Tyneside since Ellen Wilkinson (MP for Jarrow 1935-47).
