Description | Northumberland is comprised of four constituencies, two of which are large and two which are tightly-knit. Blyth Valley is the smallest area but has the largest population. Labour had held the seat in all but one of general elections since the constituency's formation. Blyth Valley is home to disused collieries, shipyards and a power station - providing a stark contrast to the beauty of other parts of the county. The new town of Cramlington, formed from private housing estates, has expanded rapidly, adding to the North-East's new found 21st Century confidence. Ronnie Campbell, a coal miner here before he became the MP in 1987, has the distinction of being the first ever locally born and bred MP for the seat. Mr Campbell worked in the local Bates pit for 27 years before being made redundant a year before becoming an MP. In 1997 he more than doubled his majority to 17,736, and held a comfortable 12,000 majority in 2001.
